Frederic Bastiat (1801-1850), French economist, faced a turbulent time in France following the French Revolution and the Napoleonic era. Facing an onslaught of socialist ideals, and slowly dying from tuberculosis, he wrote this pamphlet.
Referring to the abusive State as “the Law” and to its greedy policies as “legal plunder, Bastiat laid the groundwork for future generations of freedom-minded people.
“When law and morality contradict each other, the citizen has the cruel alternative of either losing his moral sense or losing his respect for the law.”
Bastiat’s words were nigh prophetic. When you look around today, it becomes apparent which choice Americans have made.
Even by today’s standards, The Law is simply written, easy to understand, and concise.
Bastiat’s language is plain, his observations blunt. His insight into socialism, government, economics, and a free society are well worth considering, especially for a people who understand what Babylon is.
